Mobislyder: Steadicam glider for smartphones

Mobislyder: Steadicam glider for smartphones

Considering all the recent smartphone camera upgrades, the next Orson Welles may be getting his start armed with nothing more than an iPhone 4S and a Mobislyder camera stabilizer.

The Mobislyder from Glidetrack looks a bit like a skateboard with four screaming green feet. It comes with a variety of mounts to fit a wide selection of smartphones, handheld camcorders, and compact cameras.

The Mobislyder doesn't roll around, but it does put your smartphone on smooth rails to dispense with all that "NYPD Blue" camera shake you get from handheld video shots.

The mounts swivel around so that the glider track can be used at any angle. It weighs just over a pound for amateur auteurs on the go.

The example videos show off smooth tracking shots that would be difficult or impossible to achieve by hand. It still requires a steady touch to guide the video device manually along the glider.

Urinals get more interesting with built-in games

Urinals get more interesting with built-in games
Published on Coolest Gadgets | shared via feedly

Guys have basically two choices when it comes to relieving themselves at the urinal – to look down, or look ahead. Looking to the left or right and starting up a conversation with the person next to you is more often than not a big no-no in most guys’ books, after all, it is not going to make anyone more comfortable at all, and neither is it good form to take a peek at your neighbor’s goods.

Here is something to keep you occupied just in case you feel that you need to shoot your mouth off – Captive Media has come up with a urinal mounted, urine-controlled games console – exclusively for men, of course. Talk about a new kind of hands-free gaming, as there is no controller for you to work around with, making this “wee” time different from Nintendo’s Wii…

A rather sturdy device will reside above the normal oval ceramic urinal bowl, where it is touted to be the gateway to an entire world of entertainment. You will be presented with a trio of generous targets where you will need to aim with your stream of piss in the urinal itself – stickers in the unit will read “Start”, “Left” and “Right”. The console is sensitive enough to detect just where the golden stream falls thanks to an infra-red device, and among the games on offer would be a skiing challenge and a multiple choice pub quiz.

I suppose a pub quiz makes good sense – those who knock back pint after pint tend to have to make more frequent trips to the loo, so a game like that is just perfect. Once you are done with your business, you will be able to use your smartphone to post up your personal best score on Twitter as well as a live leader board. The console unit itself comes with a 12″ LCD display, where it will reside behind some toughened glass so that just in case a brawl breaks out, it is capable of withstanding any collateral damage, and is easily cleaned.

Nice to know that the sensor unit is contactless and will not require a camera, which is definitely another important design consideration. It would be interesting to see just how the ladies will be able to get their equivalent, as a design is being worked on to address the issue of long waiting times.

iPhone gets built-in bottle opener in Opena Case

There are iPhone cases, and then there are iPhone cases – case in point (pardon the pun), the Opena Case that will work with not only the iPhone 4, but the more recent iPhone 4S as well. What makes the Opena Case different from all the other cases that you have seen in the past? For starters, it will not come with “luggage” such as corny drawings as well as Swarovski crystals, but rather, will feature a slide out bottle opener made out of stainless steel to add that bit of “Ooomph!”. Fitting both GSM and CDMA devices from Apple, the cool factor is definitely something worth looking into. The asking price? AUD$39, and increase that figure to AUD$44 if you want to have it shipped internationally if you live outside of the US, Canada and Australia.

MyWirelessTV Wireless HDMI Kit from Actiontec

via Coolest Gadgets by Mark R on 11/21/11

I had to admit that I like the very concept of the Actiontec MyWirelessTV. It is a way of wirelessly linking something like a cable or satellite Box or DVR to any HDTV.

I got a chance to see it work for myself, and I was pretty amazed at the ease of it. All I did was connect the transmitter to my computer, the receiver to my TV, and suddenly, what was on my laptop screen was on my TV. And it worked instantly, from the moment that it was plugged in.

The MyWirelessTV has two modes. The first is the IR extender which allows the user to use one’s remote control virtually anywhere. The other is the USB extender, to connect a computer in one room to an HDTV in another.

It comes with a remote control, and the user has the option to add additional transmitters and receivers anytime. This allows the user to access Blu-ray players, game consoles, computers, and other HDMI devices with this device.

Devices like these make me wonder if we are truly looking at a wireless future where all video devices will simply be tucked away and wirelessly transmitting to all the monitors in the house. Surely this is happening already somewhere.

You should be able to get the Actiontec MyWirelessTV for about $229.99 from places like Best Buy.

Cotton Candy offers Android on platforms other than phones and tablets

via Coolest Gadgets by Edwin on 11/22/11

I myself am quite surprised (pleasantly, of course) at the progress that Google’s Android mobile operating system has made since it was introduced just a few years back. I clearly remember the first few Android smartphones from HTC that did not really do that well in the market, but over the years, things have changed a whole lot – and now, more than 50% of smartphones in the US are running on some version of Android or another. In fact, Google intends to bring Android’s presence to just about everywhere, and FXI Technologies’ Cotton Candy USB device is said to aid Google’s quest.

Basically, FXI’s idea is to deliver an ultra-lean computer that is confined within the physical limitations of a small USB stick. Using it is simple – as long as the device supports USB storage, plug in the Cotton Candy and you’re good to go as it registers as a USB drive. Once that is done, you are able to run the Android OS in a secure environment within your desktop, thanks to the presence of a Windows/OSX/Linux-compatible virtualization client that is embedded in the device itself.

Once the Cotton Candy is stuck into a computer, the Android operating system will appear in a virtualized window on your desktop. There is another positive to this particular USB key as well – it will feature an HDMI connector, letting you stick it to your TV and use Android on the big screen to boot. Of course, to take full advantage of this situation, you are required to have some sort of secondary input device, including a Bluetooth mouse/keyboard combo for you to get work done.

Just what kind of system specifications does it have? Well, for starters, there is a 1.2GHz ARM Cortex A9-based processor in addition to ARM’s quad-core Mali GPU and 1GB RAM. Seems rather impressive for something so small, where it is good enough to run Android 2.3 Gingerbread. I wonder just how far the Android operating system is going to permeate itself across multiple platforms and devices, but the Cotton Candy is tipped to arrive only sometime in the middle of 2012 for $200 thereabouts.
