The next wave of waterproof gadgets

inSing.com - 6 days 1 hr 44 mins agoWhether you are an outdoorsy person or an urbanite who prefers to hang out in cafes, chances are you will still have to deal with Singapore’s erratic weather conditions. And we are all aware that the biggest enemy of electronic devices, other than dropping and smashing, is water. But fret not, it seems that waterproof gadgets are also on the minds of major gadget makers, judging from the slew of waterproof products showcased at CES 2012. We look at the some of the latest and upcoming waterproof gizmos.
Camera
Nikon COOLPIX AW100
According to Nikon, this shooter is waterproof, shockproof and freezeproof. Capturing pictures at 16 megapixels, this versatile compact camera comes with a 28-140mm lens, 5X optical zoom and ISO sensitivity of up to 3200 for shooting in low light conditions. With waterproof protection of up to 10 metres and a drop height of slightly over 1.5 metres, shooting pictures for your next kayaking trip or trekking expedition is now conceivable.
Other great features include a built-in GPS with an electronic map display to help you remember where pictures were taken and a new Action Control function that helps you adjust camera settings when you shake it.
It is available in orange, blue, black and camouflage print for jungle trekkers after some stealth action. Available at major electronics stores and Nikon authorised retailers for $529.
Bluetooth headset
Jabra SPORT
For a long time now, I have been looking for a product that allows me to stream music wirelessly while running. Many of the current wired earphones or in-ear devices today either come with ridiculously long cables or tend to fall out of the ear after every 3 steps.
I recently tested out Jabra SPORT, a Bluetooth stereo headset that streams music and calls wirelessly. Designed to deliver music during workouts and outdoor activities, the headset pairs with my iPhone easily and provides decent audio quality. Another great thing about this headset is that it feels light and when worn, fits securely and comfortably over your ears. The headset’s exterior is certified rain-, dust-, and shock-resistant so you can simply clean it with a wet tissue after your workout. More importantly, the headset’s wind-shielded microphone allows for crystal clear calls while you pound the tracks. For best results, strap your phone to an armband as placing it in your pocket causes intermittent breaks in the Bluetooth connection. For a true hands-free workout, use the built-in FM radio.
Jabra SPORT is available at Challenger, Epicentre, Nubox, and authorized Jabra resellers for $148.
Digital Tablet
Toshiba Waterproof Concept Tablet
After wowing the geeks at the recent CES 2012 with its lightest and thinnest 10.1-inch tablet, the Toshiba Excite, Toshiba is out to tease consumers further with its 2012 product line-up. And one such other product is its waterproof tablet that may go on sale even before the year is up! The 10.1-inch OLED (organic light-emitting diode) tablet was unveiled to a roomful of tech enthusiasts submerged in a fish tank during the CES. Although Toshiba did not release any water resistant rating, one key feature that got everyone excited was the tablet’s ability to charge wirelessly using a technology called magnetic resonance while floating in the tank. It may not be the lightest nor thinnest tablet around but this baby lets you go for a swim without losing access to the internet.
Smartphone
Fujitsu ARROWS ES IS12F waterproof super phone
Fujitsu’s latest prototype runs on a NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core 1.2GHz processor (possibly a first for a quad core chip to be installed in a smartphone), has a super big 4.6-inch display with 1280 x 720 pixels and is waterproof! And just to make sure that it qualifies for a ‘super phone’ status, this smartphone will also come with a 13.1-megapixel camera that has an ISO sensitivity of up to 25600 that is only available in high end compact cameras and DSLRs!
Fujitsu’s hydro phone is slated for a Q2 2012 release but it will only be available in Japan. Right now, you can only wish Fujitsu ships it to the rest of Asia.
Camcorder
Sony Bloggie Sport
The latest handheld video camera from Sony is made for the extreme environment and according to the maker “practically indestructible”. Shock proof, dirt resistant and can still keep on recording while underwater of up to 5 metres, the portable Bloggie Sport weighs less than 150 grams and has a 2.7-inch touchscreen.
The pocket camcorder capable of recording full 1080p HD video and capturing 5-megapixel images also features an ‘Underwater Mode’ that automatically adjusts white balance and contrast for a well-balanced image instead of producing images with a blue-tint—typical of underwater photography. Users with butter fingers need not worry, as this camcorder’s ruggedized casing can survive a drop height of up to 1.5 metres.

Acer CloudMobile seen in the wild, showing off 4.3-inch 1280 x 720 display
We've been catching glimpses of the Acer CloudMobile for the past couple of weeks, but now the company has shown the device in the flesh at Milan Fashion Week. As we've heard suggested before, it's running the unannounced Android 4.1, with a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 4.3-inch 1280x720 display, 8-megapixel camera, NFC capabilities, and Dolby Mobile audio. Notebook Italia reports that the handset feels well built, with the smooth lines and rounded edges giving the CloudMobile "definite personality." Cellulare Magazine has also been given some time with the phone, producing a video (in Italian) showing off the crisp, bright screen and very responsive UI.
One aspect of the phone that's still apparently absent is the AcerCloud service —...

PermalinkThis is How Terrifying It is to Fly in an Airplane Stunt Team
When man created GoPro cameras, this is what he intended them to be used for. This video shows the amazing Black Diamond Jet Team in training—and if you're scared of flying, it might be best not to watch it.
Two things strike me. First, the banked turns close to the ground look incredibly low. I can only being to imagine how exhilarating that must be. Second, when the team fly in formation, the amount of buffeting which causes the planes to move relative to each other is quite, quite terrifying. These guys have massive balls. Respect. CamelBak All Clear UV Water Purifier: Zaps Microbes Dead!
When you’re outdoors, either for camping or because the Great Zombie Apocalypse has finally begun, you need to drink clean water. As such, some of the portable filters and water purifiers are a bit annoying to use, which is why I think that CamelBak’s All Clear UV water purifier is so cool. You just fill up your water bottle and use the integrated UV light, and presto, your water is read to drink.
The All Clear bottle is your standard 750ml CamelBak bottle, that’s made out of Tritan and is BPA-free. The tech is integrated in the cap. It’s got a UV-C light and controller, which can make water drinkable in 60 seconds. The cap uses two rechargeable Li-Ion batteries, that can be recharged via USB. They can handle 80 cycles of purification, and the UV-C bulb is rated for 10,000 cycles. Keep in mind that the bottle doesn’t remove sediment or particles from drinking water, nor can it desalinate salt water from the ocean. Still, it’ll kill germs, and that’s where much of the nastiest waterborne illness comes from.
The CamelBak All Clear UV bottle costs $99 (USD) and is available over at REI.
LG Optimus Vu arrives at MWC 2012
Just where do you think the line should be drawn when it comes to a small tablet as opposed to a smartphone with a really large display size? Well, Samsung broke new boundaries with their Samsung Galaxy Note, offering 5.3” of viewing goodness to the masses, and I do not suppose that LG intends to hit back with a model of their own in reply – calling it the LG Optimus Vu, although the screen size is not as generous as the Galaxy Note’s at just 5”. Still, 5” is plenty large for a smartphone, considering how many models in the market these days come with 4.3” of viewing real estate.
The LG Optimus Vu was developed with productivity on the go in mind, which is why the screen size has been increased to 5”. Sporting LTE connectivity for super fast Internet connection wherever you are (as long as there is a decent connection, of course, otherwise it would drop one tier to 3G) alongside IPS display technology, the Optimus Vu is a performer to be reckoned with – especially when you consider its 1.5GHz dual-core processor, aided by 32GB of internal memory as well as a rather beefy 2,080 mAh battery that ought to get the job done – considering bulk of the battery’s life would go into keeping the display working.
The large 5” display will come with a 4:3 aspect ratio that intends to make viewing documents, books, internet and multimedia contents a whole lot easier – not to mention far more comfortable. Specially optimized for viewing to grasp more at a single glance, not to mention making note taking a snap in order to increase productivity in everyday life, I foresee a lot of digital doodles being drawn on this as well.
The LG Optimus Vu also comes with a special built-in QuickClip hotkey that enables users to be able to capture screenshots and memos with but a single push. With their own Rubberdium pen, you can jot down notes in a jiffy, or also use your finger if you cannot be bothered with something as formal as a writing instrument. Other productivity apps were also thrown into the mix for the Optimus Vu:, including Polaris Office. No idea on pricing or availability yet as at press time.
