Samsung Series 7 Slate PC announced

Samsung Series 7 Slate PC announced
Published on Coolest Gadgets | shared via feedly

Samsung seems to be on a roll these days in the world of consumer electronics (actually, they’ve been banging it in for quite some time already come to think of it), what with their range of electronic items that elicit nothing but a “Wow!” from the masses, ranging from ever slimmer LED TVs, 3D TVs and top of the line Android-powered smartphones. Well, the notebook and tablet categories are not left alone either, and this time around we have the Samsung Series 7 Slate PC to drool over.

This is a lightweight slate computer that sports full PC capabilities, powered by Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system. First unveiled at the recently concluded IFA 2011 show, the Series 7 Slate PC is said to deliver all the trappings of a full-sized laptop without sacrificing on form factor, making sure those who are always on the move will be able to take advantage of the processing muscle that has been crammed within to deliver maximum productivity no matter where one is.

Just how light is the Samsung Series 7 Slate PC? Well, it will weigh no more than two pounds, measuring a mere 0.5″ thin, making it highly portable in its compact size. Don’t be fooled by the rather fragile exterior – the Slate packs an 11.6″ display, running on an Intel Core i5 processor (which is mid-range and should be more than enough for the average office user), and stashing away up to 128GB of storage space in the form of an SSD. Connectivity options include USB, Wi-Fi, WiMAX and HSPA.

Since there is the word “Slate” in its name, obviously the 11.6″ display comprises of a highly responsive capacitive multi-touch screen, where you can also opt to flex those finger muscles of yours by writing naturally on the screen via an electromagnetic pen. At the front is a 2-megapixel camera for vain self-portraits and video conference calls, while the back lies a 3-megapixel camera to capture some impromptu moments.

Is it me, or does the 7 hour battery life have to do with the name? I suppose not, making it a coincidence, but for those who are interested in the Samsung Series 7 Slate PC , you will have to fork out anywhere from $1,099 to $1,349, depending on the final hardware configuration as it arrives at the market this coming October 2nd.

Life with the Eco Pod, Rugged All Terrain Speaker Case

We have reported on the Eco Pod before, and I got a chance to try out the Rugged All Terrain Speaker Case for myself.

For those who aren’t familiar with this product, I’m not certain whether “Rugged All Terrain” is an adequate adjective for it. I mean, you can use your mobile device in any terrain where you can get a signal, really. The Eco Pod is designed for those who want to take their iPod, iPhone, or other smartphone in the rugged outdoor conditions of the real world.

It is IPX7 certified to stay within 3 feet of water for 30 minutes without any leaks. The Eco Pod includes some IPX7 ear buds so you can listen to your music in watery conditions.

The Eco Pod is a polycarbonate case with two reinforced clamps. It has a two inch detachable carbiner clip for travel, as well as a slot to keep it in your belt if you like.

Now here is the bad news. When your smartphone or iPod or whatever device is in the unit, you cannot access the touchscreen. In other words, once you hook it up in the case with the 3.5 mm jack, close the cover, you had better have it set to a big playlist or a radio if you want to hear some music.

This is the price you pay for protecting your mobile device in harsh conditions. The price that you will pay for the Eco Pod is about $49.95 on the Grace Digital web site.

Skytex S-series tablet PC runs on Windows 7

Skytex S-series tablet PC runs on Windows 7
Published on Coolest Gadgets | shared via feedly

When we talk about tablets these days, there really isn’t any other comparison apart from Android-powered models and the iPad family – anything else really isn’t going to make the news. Having said that, Skytex Technology decided to throw their lot into the ring with Windows 7 by offering the EXOPC, which delivers a customized version of their touch-centric user interface to the SKYTAB S-series tablet device.

Underneath the hood lies a dual-core Intel Atom N550 processor, where it is touted to be the ultimate in mobile computing. It will merge the portability of a slate or tablet alongside the flexibility and familiarity of Windows for those who have yet to take the plunge into the world of Android or iOS.

HTC has their HTC Sense, and Skytex intends to impress with their EXO UI (user interface) which is said to deliver an additional layer of touch-friendly features and apps to the Windows 7 ecosystem. Coming in a sleek and functional design that will sport a vibrant and crisp 9.7” capacitive multi-touch display right in front, this display is capable of recognizing up to 4-points of touch recognition. Not only that, the display has a 4:3 aspect ratio which makes it ideal for reviewing and editing documents, a suitable Web-browsing device, and if you so happen to be big on digital textbooks or eBooks, this would make do as well.

Intel’s integrated graphics will offer you the relevant graphical processing power, while 2GB of DDR3 RAM should make sure you get to chug along nicely be it games or video playback, as well as offering painless document editing.

There is also an HDMI out connection that lets you connect easily to other compatible devices such as a projector, HDTV or an external monitor if you so happen to use this for your presentation – certainly beats carrying around a heavy laptop that will send your shoulders downward when you carry it around for a day. If you need to make video calls, there is always the built-in 1.3-megapixel camera and microphone, while Wi-Fi (b/g/n) connectivity helps you remain hooked up to the Internet without the need for another data plan subscription.

The Skytab S-series tablet will ship with Windows 7 Home Premium and EXO UI, where you can place a pre-order today, and shipping will commence from early next month onwards. Any takers?

Callet gives your mobile phone pockets for cash and credit cards

Callet gives your mobile phone pockets for cash and credit cards
Published on Coolest Gadgets | shared via feedly

Here is a good question that someone once asked me: which would you rather lose, your wallet or your mobile phone?

If you have a Callet, then you have probably lost both. You can see it on the iPhone 4 in this picture, and it is a high quality Gel-Polymer the gives your mobile some pockets. (See the slits on the back?)

These slit pockets are perfect for two credit cards, or maybe a little cash. It is perfect for situations when you are can’t bring in a bag into a stadium for a game. Granted, I never have that problem, but I don’t have a purse. Still, as a man, it would be handy to have a credit card and cash on hand. It turns my mobile phone cover into a money clip!

Personally, I think the Callet is ahead of its time. This mobile phone cover is prepared for the age of the digital wallet, when we no longer carry our wallet and mobile phone as two separate items. I suppose that cash, licenses, and credit cards will all be apps, but until then, the Callet has the pockets for them.

You should be able to get the Callet on the official website for the Blackberry Bold, Blackberry Curve, and the iPhone. They come in many colors and cost $19.95 each.

Ever read a Batman comic and wondered just what you would have done differently if you were the caped crusader? Sure, you have the benefit of hindsight since you know how the story pans out, but pretend for a while that you are in Bruce Wayne’s shoes – would you do what he has done? If you feel that you would have taken a different route, then might I interest you in the $19.99 Mini Mez-Itz Batmobile with Batman that allows you to relive those crucial moments in the comics, but with your own style?

The Mini Mez-Itz Batmobile with Batman set is miniature goodness at its very best – Batman here measures a mere 2″ in height, but you can definitely let your imagination run wild. Boasting a real cloth cape, the mini Batmobile comes with a removable hard top, letting Batman (and his sidekick of choice) jump out and save the day.

Even the dash is highly detailed, sporting a wide range of buttons and switches, and obviously for privacy’s sake, the windows will be tinted (partly because they are made out of solid plastic). This is the perfect desk set for Batman fans to have their imagination run wild. Just be more liberal with your thoughts, since the Batmobile has wheels that will not roll.

Vuzix Wrap 1200VR video eyewear unveiled

Vuzix Wrap 1200VR video eyewear unveiled
Published on Coolest Gadgets | shared via feedly

Vuzix is well known for their range of video eyewear, and they are certainly keeping up with the times with their latest release, the Vuzix Wrap 1200VR video eyewear. Why the VR suffix in the model number? Well, VR means Virtual Reality, and it should usher in a new era of video eyewear. The Wrap 1200VR is said to be able to support widescreen VGA video up to 720P, not to mention the latest 3D games as well as upgraded head-tracking to make sure it remains ahead of the pack (while you edge past the Joneses with your latest gizmo).

Do not expect to look nerdy with this sunglass-style Wrap 1200VR, as careful thought had been incorporated into the overall design. Capable of bringing virtual worlds to life with its 16:9 widescreen, you can also more or less “step inside” your thanks to the virtual display and superior head tracking capability. The supersized display itself will feature a 35 degree field of view, which is similar to watching 3D content on a 75″ display from as near as 10 feet away.

Just what makes up the Wrap 1200VR’s head tracking technology? Well, it is known as the Wrap Tracker 6TC that sports a compass, alongside the aid of 9 sensors that work together to create a 3 degree of freedom solution with automatic drift compensation for smooth, realistic motion tracking. Don’t worry about new versions of 3D videos – this model supports the latest side-by-side 3D video format, not to mention playing nice with over 100 titles for 3D video and/or head tracking. Love video gaming staples like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Fallout 3, and F.E.A.R.? Fret not, those are all covered.

The Wrap 1200VR will be able to hook up to more or less any Windows graphic card desktop or laptop computer, never mind the make or model. Windows 7, Vista and XP (32 and 64-bit versions) will also be supported, making the Wrap 1200VR more or less the perfect big screen interactive gaming monitor. Throwing in optional interfaces, the Wrap 1200VR can connect to component video devices such as the Xbox 360 and PS3.

All that technology is not going to come cheap though – we’re looking at a price point of $599.99, but good thing it is large enough to fit over most prescription eyewear – unless you use a frame that is extremely artsy and way out large.

Dexim’s AppSpeed is a miniature iPhone-controlled monster truck

Dexim’s AppSpeed is a miniature iPhone-controlled monster truck
Published on Coolest Gadgets | shared via feedly

I have covered products from Dexim before, they usually make products that give more power to iDevices.

One of their newest products is the AppSpeed, a Gyro Controlled RC Monster Truck. The AppSpeed allows an iDevice user to control a two-inch tall monster truck by tilting their compatible iDevice, provided it has iOS 4.0 or later.

The App Speed comes with a custom-built RF Transmitter that fits in the bottom of the iDevice. The moment that contact is made with the 30-pin connector, the iDevice user is prompted to download the application necessary to control the AppSpeed Monster Truck.

As for the little monster truck’s power, it comes with a USB cord that you can connect to your computer or a wall (if you have a USB wall adapter). It also has a quick battery charger that requires 3 AAA batteries (not included) for when you need some power on the go.

The user also has a choice for the type of control as he or she can shift from gyroscope power to touch sensor mode. It also has some preset stations that allow the user to ZigZag, Spin, or Dance one’s vehicle to music.

You should be able to purchase the AppSpeed for about $69.90 on the official Dexim site.
